A strong association between vitamin B6 and cancer has been observed. Addequate intake of vitamin B6 lowers the risk of many cancers. There are six forms of vitamin B6 and interconvert to the different forms inside the cell.
Vitamin B6 (P5P) also known as pyridoxal 5-phosphate, has been shown to have potent anticancer activity at easily achievable oraly administered dosages. Vitamin B6 (P5P) is involved in amino acid metabolism. The unique feature of the pyridoxal molecule is the presence of an aldehyde group which forms bonds with amino groups of amino acids. Pyridoxal is capable of non-enzymatically degrading cysteine and this may be the reason for the observed anticancer activity.
